Our Annual Iditarod Event "EXTREME TRAIL TALES" will take place at the time of the race start, 1 pm, Sat, March 4. Check this website for details.

Our March meeting will be on the 18th at 3 pm at the home of a member. We will be having a mini-workshop on Donald Davis' approach to creating stories from a character in our lives. Please contact us for directions.

Guild storyteller Betty Arnett will be Artist-in-Residence at Scenic Park Elementary - February 27,-March 3, 2006. She will be teaching students about storytelling, relating to the theme: "There's a Story Inside All of Us-- Can you find the one inside of you?" Thursday evening, March 2, Betty will present stories at "A Night in the South Pacific" at the school for the student body and the community.

Guild storyteller Pam McDowell Saylor is currently teaching a storytelling class for parents of pre-school and kindergarten children at a private school in Anchorage-- entitled "Storytelling: Dancing with Living Imagery."

Guild storyteller Linda Benson, who is also an actress and director, is directing a play to be performed at a dinner theater (open to the public) on March 12 at the Anchorage Senior Activity Center. It's a mature comedy entitled "At Halftime." Linda is a director for Anchorage Community Theatre. Call ACT at 344-4713 for more information or ASAC at 258-7823 to buy tickets.

At this moment, Becky Harrison-Drake is telling her original "Raven Tales" at the Anchorage Folk Festival, accompanied by Debbie Addie (cello) and Judy Jacobs (fiddle). The guild has contributed two storytellers to the festival this year. Hopefully, there will be more next year!

Our September meeting will take place on Saturday, September 17, 3:00 to 5:00 at Anchorage Community Theatre, 1133 E. 70th Ave. (off the Old Seward Highway). We will be discussing our role in ACT's The House of Christmas. Please bring a 3-4 minute story about what you did this summer.

One of the featured exhibits at the Anchorage Museum of History and Art this summer is Frost: Life and Culture of the Sami-- Reindeer People of Norway. Thursdays at 3 p.m. starting May 19 and running through June, Faith Fjeld hosts a storytelling program, titled "How the Reindeer Came to Norway." Faith's grandparents were Sami from Sweden and Norway.

Guild member BETTY ARNETT will be artist-in-residence at North Star Elementary the week of April 25-29. She will be teaching storytelling to children in grades K-3. On Friday the children will present a storytelling assembly.

LAURA SIMMS (www.laurasimms.com), one of the foremost storyellers nationally and internationally, will be in Anchorage on May 7 and 8. On Saturday, May 7, she will serve as master storyteller and oral tradition bearer at Women's Health Day at the Captain Cook Hotel. She will tell stories throughout the day and will teach a workshop at 3:30 entitled "How Story Heals." The entire event is free and open to the public. On Sunday, May 8, Ms. Simms will offer a storytelling concert entitled "Women and Wild Animals: A Mother's Day Storytelling Event" at 7 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 725 W. 9th Ave. The event is sponsored by the Alaska Zoo and hosted by the Storytellers' Guild of Anchorage. There is no admission charge; however this is a benefit performance for the zoo in Buhusi, Romania. Donations to "Lion's Roar", Laura's project to support the zoo and community in Buhusi, are encouraged and gratefully accepted.

"An Afternoon in Ireland" will include storytelling this year, as LINDA BENSON from the guild shares Irish stories to accent the music and dancing.
